Italian tennis players win Billie Jean King Cup

Italy remains the top tennis nation of the year. Jannik Sinner’s triumph is followed by the next big success.

Italy’s tennis players have won the Billie Jean King Cup. The Italians beat Slovakia 2-0 in the final in Malaga to win their fifth title in the prestigious team competition.

Lucia Bronzetti put Italy in the lead with a clear 6-2, 6-4 win over Viktoria Hruncakova. Jasmine Paolini, who reached the finals at the French Open and Wimbledon this year, then also beat Rebecca Sramkova in the top singles match, 6-2, 6-1, to clinch the first title win since 2013.

The German tennis players were knocked out in the quarter-finals with a clear 0-2 defeat against Great Britain. Both Jule Niemeier and Laura Siegemund lost their singles in two sets.
