Is there a threat of withdrawal? Concerns about Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz had complained of health problems after his opening match. On Tuesday, he stopped training.

Spain’s tennis star Carlos Alcaraz is struggling with increasing health problems at the ATP Finals in Turin. The 21-year-old stopped training on Tuesday morning after only a few minutes because he felt unwell. Alcaraz had publicly revealed on Monday after his opening defeat against Casper Ruud that he was suffering from stomach problems and had caught a cold in the run-up to the season finale.

It is unclear whether the Spaniard will be able to play in his second group match on Wednesday (2 p.m./Sky) against the Russian Andrei Rublev. On Friday, Alcaraz would be the third group opponent of Germany’s number one Alexander Zverev. The Bulgarians Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas are on hand in Turin to step in if a player withdraws.

French Open and Wimbledon champion Alcaraz plans to continue competing in the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, where clay court king Rafael Nadal will make his farewell appearance, after the ATP Finals.
