In the duel between the World Cup hosts Canada and the United States, the Canadians won 2-1 in the CONCACAF Nations League’s third-place game. For FC Bayern, there was only initially worrying news in the case of Alphonso Davies.
The captain of the Canadian national team injured himself in the third-place play-off of the CONCACAF Nations League against the USA, which his team managed to win by a narrow margin of 2-1 (1-1) on Sunday night, despite being without their leader.
Left-footed Davies went down early in the game against the Americans and touched his right leg. He was substituted (12th minute) and returned to the sidelines after treatment, albeit with an ice pack on his right knee. The left-back had already sustained a minor thigh injury in the semi-final against Mexico (0-2), but was declared fit in time for the third-place play-off.
Marsch sees red
Davies apparently does not have to fear a longer absence. The full-back told a reporter from One Soccer during the game that he was doing well.
Without the 24-year-old, the goals from Oluwaseyi (27th) and David (59th) secured the prestigious victory for the Canadians over their co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup. Patrick Agyemang (35th) had equalized for the USA in the meantime.
Canada’s coach, former Leipzig coach Jesse Marsch, was shown the red card for complaining (54th minute) after he was too vehement in demanding a penalty. Joe Scally of Gladbach was in the starting lineup for Mauricio Pochettino’s USA, while Gio Reyna of Dortmund was substituted on in the 69th minute.
Mexico wins CONCACAF Nations League: Jimenez is the match winner again.
Meanwhile, Mexico won the CONCACAF Nations League final 2-1 against Panama. As against Canada, Raul Jimenez was once again the clear match winner – the Fulham FC striker followed up his brace against Canada with two goals against Panama.
Jimenez put coach Javier Aguirre’s side in front as early as the 8th minute, before Adalberto Carrasquilla of Mexican club UNAM Pumas equalized from the penalty spot in first-half injury time. After that, the game swung back and forth before Jimenez decided it in favor of Mexico with a goal in injury time.
