United World Wrestling has suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) following the indictment of the federation’s previous president.
As fresh elections were yet to be held following the indictment of the previous federation president Brij Bhushan Singh for sexual misconduct, the sanction was taken by the world body.
The 66-year-old politician faces charges of sexual harassment and stalking but has been released on bail. In the wake of the scandal, the federation’s leadership was dissolved and new elections, originally scheduled for early August, were postponed indefinitely at the last moment.
India’s athletes will still be allowed to compete at the Asian Games in September, but not under the Indian flag. Singh denies all the allegations against him, seeing himself as the victim of a “conspiracy”.
