In the midst of a sporting crisis: Ajax part ways with director Mislintat

The name Sven Mislintat has already been played a lot during the week. The reason are serious accusations against the former Stuttgart sports director. Now the 50-year-old has also lost his job at Ajax Amsterdam

As Ajax Amsterdam announced on Sunday evening on the official channels, the Dutch club has parted ways with Sven Mislintat with immediate effect. The technical director had only taken the job in May this year and has now become a victim of the Ajax bosses in the midst of a sporting results crisis – 14th in the table, only one win.

Club boss Jan van Halst, who was installed on a transitional basis, commented on the dismissal as follows: “Several attempts to restore the broad support did not lead to the desired result. This also leads to unrest in and around the club due to the disappointing results. Sven has made enormous efforts for Ajax in recent months, for which we are grateful. It is now in Ajax’s interest to continue with a united effort and find our way back to sporting success.”

The “Klassieker” in the Eredivisie between Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam, which was abandoned on that very Sunday, fits into the picture: numerous Ajax fans had misbehaved badly.

Accusations against Mislintat

The name Mislintat, however, is also making headlines elsewhere. During the week, serious accusations against the former VfB manager became known.

Mislintat is accused by NOS, the Dutch equivalent of ARD, of having pushed through the transfer of Borna Sosa from his former club VfB Stuttgart to Ajax despite a conflict of interest. Specifically, it concerns the football data analysis company Matchmetrics GmbH, which he co-founded in 2016. This is because the ownership structure changed at the end of June 2023. In addition to Dietmar Mertel, a German expatriate with an affinity for football, who took a 3.6 per cent stake, Puma (3.21 per cent) and the company AKA Global GmbH (3.16 per cent) have since joined the list of shareholders.

In the course of this, Mislintat also increased his shares to 35 per cent.

VfB Stuttgart has also become involved in this matter: “VfB Stuttgart is examining the transfer activities concerned for a given reason”.
