In rainy London: Krawietz/Pütz win on the big court

For days now, the bad weather in London has repeatedly led to waiting times and postponed matches. One title will now be awarded later. German doubles participants play on the biggest courts

London (dpa) – In rainy London, the German Olympic doubles team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz are back in the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Last year’s semi-finalists beat the American tennis pros Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow from the USA 6:3, 6:4 to become the second German pairing to reach the round of the best eight.

Next up, the duo face a tough task against top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos (Spain/Argentina). Earlier, Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens had surprisingly made it through to the quarter-finals.

As there was hardly any tennis possible outdoors, the Krawietz/Pütz match was moved to the second largest covered court. Such a move is rather unusual for the earlier doubles rounds. Laura Siegemund was even given the honor of playing on Centre Court. Together with Barbora Krejcikova from the Czech Republic, she reached the quarter-finals with a 6:1, 6:2 win over Hao-Ching Chan from Taiwan and Veronika Kudermetova from Russia.

Organizers change the schedule

For days now, the recurring rain has been disrupting the match schedule. The matches on the outdoor courts will therefore start half an hour earlier on Wednesday at 10.30 a.m. local time (11.30 a.m. German time).

The weather also prompted the Wimbledon organizers to postpone the final of the mixed competition by three days. Instead of Thursday, the mixed title will now be awarded on Sunday, the organizers announced. The competition began last Friday and not even all 16 first-round matches had been played by Tuesday.

Krawietz is in the second round with his Russian mixed partner Alexandra Panova. The tennis duo had already ended Siegemund’s hopes with the American Austin Krajicek at the start
