Sportsmen and women of the German Boxing Association (DBV) will not participate in events with Russian or Belarusian athletes in the future. “There is a clear decree from the German government that there is no funding for federations that take part in events where Russians and Belarusians are also present,” said DBV sports director Michael Müller in an interview with ARD Sportschau on Thursday: “That’s why we can’t take part in them.”
According to Müller, staying away from such events is a “recommendation of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, for political and moral reasons. We are fully behind that.”
Due to the DBV’s decision, no German boxers are likely to compete at the upcoming U19 World Championships in Alicante (13 to 27 November). “If the confirmation comes that Russians are taking part, we will not fly,” said Müller.
