Virgil van Dijk became the most expensive defender of all time last week, after his transfer from Southampton to Liverpool for about 84 million euros. The defender was not yet able to play against Leicester City (2-1) on Saturday, but the former player of Willem II, FC Groningen and Celtic is expected to make his first minutes in the competition with Burnley on New Year’s Day.
Dean Sounders is not entirely convinced of Van Dijk’s qualities. The former attacker of Liverpool, among others, thinks that this will be found out if the Orange-international does not quickly improve his attitude:”I have seen Van Dijk sitting down when he gets caught up and I have to say honestly, I hope I am wrong, but he really has to improve his attitude.
“If I am a manager of Liverpool, I would think that he would be discouraged quickly. Also among me. If I were Klopp, I would say to Van Dijk:’ I paid EUR 84 million for you, you get EUR 230,000 a week, the only thing I want is that you give everything on the training every day for an hour and a half and do your best on Saturday. Is that a deal'”, Saunders told talkSPORT.
“If one day he doesn’t do that at Liverpool, he doesn’t try to do his best, then he breaks the contract. Liverpool made an attempt to capture Van Dijk last summer, but the current number four did not approach the sixteenfold Dutch national Orange International in accordance with the rules at that time. As Southampton threatened to file a complaint against Liverpool for the’ non-regulatory’ way of acting, the club apologized. Liverpool withdrew from the struggle for Van Dijk, but a few months later it has finally reached a transition.
Do you think Virgil van Dijk will succeed at Liverpool?
