Latest results and form
On Saturday Iceland had a day to forget as they were turned over 6-0 by Switzerland in their first match of the UEFA Nations League. Managing just one shot on target, their current form is as bad as it can get really. In the World Cup, they started so well with a draw against Argentina but then lost 2-0 to Nigeria and 2-1 to Croatia.
Belgium played in a friendly against Scotland last week and it was a very comfortable 4-0 victory, with Lukaku, Hazard and Batshuayi (two) all getting on the scoresheet. In their run to the World Cup semi-final, they won all three of their group stage matches (against Panama, Tunisia and England), followed by a 3-2 win over Japan, a famous 2-1 victory over Brazil in the quarterfinals before losing to eventual winners France in the semis. So Belgium’s form could not be much hotter than it is right now.
Team news
Iceland is expected to field a very similar team to the one that lost so heavily to Switzerland. Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson is the key man who will be keen to make a difference against a Belgium team that includes so many Premier League players.
Belgium’s star players do not appear to have any World Cup hangovers, with Hazard, Lukaku, and Batshuayi having picked up exactly where they left off. Radja Nainggolan retired from the Belgium national team but he had not made it into the World Cup squad, so they have the same set of players to move forward with.
