Hemp man misses surprise

The Davis Cup player comes close to an upset, but then loses to the number one seeded Argentinean Francisco Cerúndolo.

Tennis pro Yannick Hanfmann (33) narrowly missed out on reaching the quarterfinals at the ATP tournament in Santiago de Chile after a tough fight.

In a thriller against the number one seeded Argentinean Francisco Cerúndolo, the Davis Cup player from Karlsruhe had to admit defeat in the end, narrowly losing 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7).

Hanfmann didn’t get off to a good start, but he fought his way back into the game against the favorite Cerúndolo at the clay court tournament – but in the tiebreak of the third set, the world number 109 lacked the necessary luck.

Hanfmann claims first victory of the season

In addition, Cerúndolo, who knocked out Germany’s number one Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of Buenos Aires about two weeks ago, showed all his class.

Before that, Hanfmann had clinched his first victory of the season on the ATP tour in the first round in Santiago de Chile.

He was knocked out in the first round at the tournaments in Adelaide and at the Australian Open, and Hanfmann did not get past the qualification in Rio de Janeiro.
