Heart surgery: Manchester United will have to do without Mazraoui for longer

Manchester United will most likely have to do without Noussair Mazraoui for weeks. The Moroccan underwent heart surgery.

Since the summer, Noussair Mazraoui has been playing in the Premiere League for Manchester United and has immediately become an established member of the Red Devils team. The 26-year-old has played in every Premier League game this season (three times as a substitute) and was also brought on by coach Erik ten Hag in the Europa League. But now the right-back will be missing from the English team for a while and is the second painful loss on the defensive side after Harry Maguire.

As ManUnited announced, Mazraoui underwent a “precautionary heart procedure” that is expected to result in a break of several weeks. However, the situation is not serious, as, according to the club, it was only “a precautionary, minor corrective procedure” to “correct a relatively common condition”. The Red Devils did not provide any further details.

Not the first time heart problems

The defender returned to England early from training with the Moroccan national team at the beginning of the week after complaining of a racing heart. In early 2023, Mazraoui had already had heart problems, and at the time he was diagnosed with myocarditis following a COVID-19 infection he contracted during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

So the operation has now been performed, with the hope that Mazraoui will soon have overcome his health problems. In any case, the management at Manchester United expect the player to make a full recovery.

Two years in Munich

In 2022, Mazraoui joined Bayern Munich from Ajax Amsterdam and made 55 appearances for the German record champions in the following two seasons, scoring once – in 2022/23, he also celebrated the championship at the end. However, he was never able to establish himself as an undisputed starter in Munich, so he moved to Manchester United in the summer, where he signed for four years. Bayern reportedly received €15 million as a fixed transfer fee, with a further five million in bonuses possible.
