AC Milan will probably have to do without Mike Maignan for the time being. The French goalkeeper suffered head trauma during the league game at Udinese Calcio on Friday evening.
Mike Maignan is at risk of being out of action for the rest of the season. As reported by Italian media, the goalkeeper had to spend the night in hospital on Friday night due to a head trauma. A statement from the club is still pending, as reported by the Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 29-year-old collided with his teammate Alex Jimenez in the 52nd minute of the game while trying to clear a cross during the game at Udinese Calcio (4-0). The goalkeeper remained motionless on the lawn of the Stadio Friuli and was taken from the field on a stretcher and then to the hospital.
Defender Jimenez was able to rejoin the game after a short period of treatment, but was also substituted shortly afterwards with head problems. According to Italian media reports, Maignan was able to leave the hospital as early as Saturday morning. The French national goalkeeper will now have to take a break from training, but should be back in the game soon.
It is still unclear how long the Rossoneri’s first-choice goalkeeper will be out for. Since joining AC from then-French champions OSC Lille for the 2020/21 season, Maignan has become the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper at AC. Among other things, he reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 2022/23 season, the Italian championship in the 2021/22 season and this season he won the Supceropa Italiana after a comeback win against city rivals Inter Milan (3-2).
With the injury, the goalkeeper could be out for the final push for the European top spots at the end of a rather disappointing season at the San Siro, as well as in the Italian Cup semi-final at the end of April (9 p.m., April 23). It is also unclear whether Maignan or substitute Marco Sportiello will play in the local derby against Atalanta Bergamo on Easter Sunday.
