Even though RB Leipzig were guests of a passionate Frankfurt Eintracht on this 10th matchday, the Saxons had the game under control for long stretches. The fatal thing, however, was that the runners-up, who are still without a win away from home, missed the absolutely possible 2:0 in the final phase, which was to take its revenge.
With only one Bundesliga win in nine games, new Eintracht coach Oliver Glasner (most recently a 0:2 in Bochum) had an extremely bumpy start in the top flight – and that was not to change against runners-up RB Leipzig. Although his defensively-minded SGE charges countered the Saxons with robust tackling at the start and almost took a 1-0 lead themselves with a curious Kostic cross against the crossbar (18th), RBL gained more and more control as time went on.
The fact that RB coach Jesse Marsch, who had recorded a narrow 1:0 cup win in Babelsberg with his squad during the week and initially benched the former Frankfurt Silva on this Bundesliga matchday, was then able to record a 1:0 lead at the break also had to do with luck. A corner awarded in the 34th minute should not have been given (Gvardiol was on it), but the VAR is not allowed to intervene in such situations.
And so the cross came from Szoboszlai, Orban cleverly extended in this rehearsed variation and Poulsen artistically scored with his backside against the chance-less Trapp (35th). Szoboszlai (38th and 45th) could even have increased it to 2:0. All in all, the 1:0 advantage of Leipzig was in order. By the way, the penalty shouts of the hosts were unjustified, Poulsen had played the ball (26th).
Tuta runs in and saves the point
The second period, meanwhile, is quickly told: Still with emotional support from the loud Eintracht fans, the home side hoped for more access, but offensively lacked ideas against a really concentrated RBL defence around boss Orban. The goal of goalkeeper Gulacsi could never be seriously bombarded with shots.
And yet the Hessians were still alive until the last second because Forsberg, in particular, missed the 2:0. The substitute first failed with a too central finish on keeper Trapp (83rd), before the international actually shot the ball over from a few metres (89th). This was to take its revenge in the last second: On a very last Kostic free-kick, on which Trapp also caused trouble up front, defender Tuta got hold of the ball and nodded it into the net for his first Bundesliga goal (90.+4). The Brazilian, who arrived from Sao Paulo in 2019, thus saved the 1-1.
However, Eintracht, who rescued an important point on the night, continue to rank in the lower reaches with just one win on the season – and close out the upcoming matchday 11 with an away game at Fürth (Sunday, 7.30pm). Vice-champion Leipzig, on the other hand, who remain without a win away from home and have missed out on fourth place, will play the top match against Dortmund the day before (6.30 p.m.).
