Harsh punishment for ex-tennis star

He was once considered a great talent, but the final breakthrough eluded him. Now Mark Philippoussis has been sentenced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency – for an offence.

Former world-class player and current tennis coach Mark Philippoussis has to pay a fine of 10,000 US dollars for violating betting rules. This was announced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (Itia).

In addition, the 46-year-old Australian was banned for four months. The Itia thus penalised Philippoussis for speaking on behalf of a gambling operator and receiving money for it.

According to the rules of the anti-corruption programme, persons actively involved in tennis are not allowed to facilitate, encourage or promote tennis betting, either directly or indirectly. This is to prevent betting operators from potentially gaining influence over matches or inside information, said Itia executive director Karen Moorhouse. “While this case is clearly not one of corruption, it is a rule that players, coaches and other stakeholders in the sport should be aware of, “, she explained.

Philippoussis had won 11 tournaments in his career and was ranked No. 8 in the world in 1999. Until May this year, the Australian was the coach of Greece’s top player Stefanos Tsitsipas.
