“Hard blow”: Wolves have to do without Matheus Cunha

Matheus Cunha (24) probably experienced his best phase at Wolverhampton Wanderers at the beginning of February. But now the ex-Hertha player is out indefinitely due to a thigh injury

Sometimes life is like a rollercoaster ride, it goes up and down. Matheus Cunha can tell you a thing or two about that. The 24-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker scored a treble in a brilliant 4-2 win over Chelsea in London at the beginning of February. On Sunday, however, the ex-Hertha and Leipzig player had to be substituted early on.

Matheus Cunha was forced off after just 20 minutes as he was unable to continue. The eleven-time Brazil international was unable to continue and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was substituted. Without their second-highest scorer this season (Matheus Cunha scored nine goals, only Hee-Chan Hwang scored one more), coach Gary O’Neil’s team lost 2-0 to the Bees from Brentford.

Coach O’Neil is worried

After thorough examinations, it is now clear that Matheus Cunha has suffered a “thigh injury”, according to the Wolves website. Coach O’Neil even explains: “It’s a serious injury.” The offensive lineman’s return could be delayed.

O’Neil says that there is “no timetable”. His player naturally wants to make a quick comeback and has “already started working on it”. But as a precaution, “week by week and day by day, we’ll see how far he can come and how quickly we can get him back”.

“His form was exceptional “

One thing is clear: “It’s a bitter blow for us, for the team and for Matheus, because he’s done very well – his form has been exceptional,” said O’Neil. However, the coach also pointed out that the Premier League’s eleventh-placed side, whose cushion to the relegation zone is just twelve points, had already had to do without the South Korean and ex-HSV and RB player Hwang during the Asian Cup and against Brentford.

O’Neil concludes: “We managed to keep going there too, and we have to do that without Matheus. “
