What a difference a week makes, especially when you look back to Hamilton starting the German Grand Prix in 14th place on the grid, whilst his rival Vettel looked to add more distance between them in the Drivers Championship. Even the biggest Hamilton fans would not have predicted what happened next, the event was described as a miracle as Hamilton went on to win the race in dramatic fashion.
Hamilton takes a 24-point lead into summer break
With the confidence he took from that event, few would have written Hamilton off in the Hungarian Grand Prix. The win has opened up a 24-point championship lead going into the summer break, putting him firmly as the favourite to win it again.
Ferrari missed their main chance to challenge
Ferrari messed up their main chance when they delayed Vettel’s pit stop so long that they came out behind Hamilton’s teammate Bottas. Vettel managed to battle back and get past Bottas with five laps to go. Before that, the two cars made contact with Bottas getting a damaged front wing in the process. Bottas went on to have another incident where contact was made with Ricciardo, which allowed Kimi Raikkonen to claim third place. The nightmare continued for Bottas, as Ricciardo then passed him to beat him to fourth place. There were no such problems for Hamilton, who had an easier race than the one he had a week earlier!
F1 is on summer break until end of August
F1 fans will now have to wait until 26th August for the Belgian Grand Prix to see the drivers in action again. No doubt Lewis Hamilton will allow himself some time to celebrate his expensive new contract with Mercedes and he may be forgiven for thinking he has probably done the hardest work already this season.
