GWS Giants Dylan Shiel allowed to talk to other clubs ahead of AFL trade period

The Australian Football League free agency starts on October 5, while the trade period begins on Monday, October 8. Greater Western Sydney Giants onballer Dylan Shiel is one of the hottest names available after he was given permission to talk to opposition clubs. The explosive player is heavily pursued by a number of Victoria-based teams, as his name has been closely associated with Hawthorn, St Kilda, and Carlton.

Dylan Shiel and Rory Lobb on the trade block

Giants’ list manager Jason McCartney confirmed Shiel will meet with a number of clubs and could be on his way out. The same applies for Rory Lobb, who traveled to Perth on Tuesday and is expected to hold talks with Fremantle over the next few days.

“Those couple of boys are out there gathering information and will be catching up with some clubs, as we work through some things that we need to (work through),”

Both players would be eligible for free agency next season, which is why the Giants are willing to listen to offers before losing them for free. They also must adhere to a limited salary cap, something they are trying to do while still maintaining a strong list of players. After all, the ultimate goal is to win the Premiership.

“Our focus is managing our interests in the short and long-term, and our priority is to win a premiership,”

“We’re really confident that we have the group to do that, but we also understand the other side of it.

“Rory comes out of contract next year and Dylan becomes a free agent, so the compensation [we receive if he leaves] is taken out of our hands and rests with the AFL.”

Giants fielding offers for Setterfield and Finlayson

Will Setterfield and Jeremy Finlayson are two more players who could be on the move when AFL free agency opens. Setterfield has been linked to Essendon, whereas Finlayson has been encouraged to explore options despite a solid campaign. It’s unlikely Greater Western Sydney parts ways with all four, but staying under the cap will force them to let someone go.
