Greek soccer in shock: national player Baldock found dead

Greek soccer is in shock: George Baldock, a twelve-time national player, is dead. This was confirmed by the 31-year-old’s family on Thursday.

According to media reports, the son of a Greek father and native of England was found lifeless in his swimming pool. “As a family, we are shocked by this terrible loss. We ask the media to respect our privacy at this time,” the family said in a statement.

The Greek Super League, in which Baldock has played for Panathinaikos Athens since the summer, had already reacted to the terrible news late on Wednesday evening. “The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow at the unexpected loss of our national player George Baldock of Panathinaikos and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” the league wrote at X.

Not selected for Wembley game due to injury

Baldock had played for Sheffield United in England for seven years before moving to Greece. Last season, he was relegated with the club from the Premier League. Due to an injury, the defender had not been nominated for the Nations League game against England on Thursday (20:45) at Wembley, reports the Greek television channel ERT.

Both the official Panathinaikos website and the club’s social media pages on X and Facebook were blacked out in honor of the player – as were those of Baldock’s former club Sheffield.
