Europe’s top goal scorers only managed modest performances last week. As a result, Viktor Gyökeres scored just once to make up ground in the Golden Shoe ranking.
The race for the Golden Shoe trophy, which the European Sports Media (ESM) association has been awarding with only a brief interruption since 1968, has recently started again – and features two former winners at the top of the ranking.
Currently in first place: Robert Lewandowski, who, at 36 years of age, continues to be unerring and has scored 16 times in 17 games for FC Barcelona in La Liga so far. This means that the Pole scores once every 87 minutes of playing time. It was almost curious that he went away empty-handed in the almost embarrassing 1-0 home defeat to Leganes at the weekend.
Tamm on the podium – for now
The currently injured Harry Kane “only” managed 14 goals, five of which he scored from the penalty spot. However, Kane only needed twelve appearances to do so.
Behind these two top strikers, a rather unknown name is holding a top spot in the ranking – not unusual for the early Golden Shoe phase: Alex Matthias Tamm, a 23-year-old Estonian, plays for Nomme Kalju in the Estonian Premium Liiga. In the recently concluded season, he did so with great success, helping his team to second place with 28 goals in 35 appearances. Because the Estonian league is given a factor of 1, while the number of goals scored by players from the German Bundesliga (as well as the other four top leagues in Europe) is given a factor of 2, Tamm is currently tied with Kane, but of course he can no longer improve his ranking and will therefore drop down the table over the next few months.
As of this weekend, Tamm has only a wafer-thin lead over the fourth-placed, for example: Goalgetter Viktor Gyökeres of Sporting Lissabon pushed himself up with his goal in the 3:2 against Boavista Porto with 18 goals at a factor of 1.5 and thus 27 points. Otherwise, the frontrunners largely came away empty-handed, but former Gladbach player Marcus Thuram, for example, climbed to a shared 13th place after scoring his eleventh goal of the season in the 90th minute of Lazio’s 6-0 win over Inter (22 points).
Marmoush and Burkardt in the top 20
Two other attackers from the Bundesliga, who are currently already well ahead, could also pass by in the near future. Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush shares 5th place (13 goals and 26 points) with none other than Erling Haaland and Mo Salah. With his ten goals (20 points), Jonathan Burkardt of Mainz 05 also just makes it into the top 20 of the Golden Shoe rankings in the current standings, which will continue to be published weekly until the end of the 2024/25 season.
