Hany Mukhtar (27) has become the first German to win the title of MLS top scorer in a close race.
On the last day of the Regular Season, it was clear: Hany Mukhtar had scored 23 goals to win the MLS “Golden Boot”. The Berlin native beat Argentinian Sebastian Driussy (Austin FC) and Hungarian Daniel Gazdag (Philadelphia Union) by just one goal.
Mukhtar is the first Nashville SC player and the first German player in league history to receive the award. The reward was a burger on the team bus after the 1-0 win at Los Angeles FC, in which the 27-year-old went without a goal of his own.
Thanks to Mukhtar’s sensational goal haul, Nashville finished fifth in the Western Conference and secured their third consecutive appearance in the play-offs. Mukhtar has accounted for 44.2 per cent of the club’s goals this season (23 of 52) and dished out 11 assists. He is also favourite for the season’s most valuable player award.
The first game in the first play-off round is against LA Galaxy. The winner of this clash will face Los Angeles FC, who have a bye as the best team in the Western Conference.
