After a season full of injuries and missing out on the European Championship, Serge Gnabry’s form at Bayern Munich is on a steep upward trajectory. He wants to confirm this trend in his DFB comeback.
The mood is relaxed when Serge Gnabry steps in front of the media together with his buddy Joshua Kimmich at the Adidas premises in Herzogenausach on Tuesday. For the first time since the 2-0 defeat in Austria last November, the 29-year-old is back among Germany’s football elite and is set to play his 46th international match in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday.
Top scorer in the squad
With 22 goals, Gnabry is even the player with the most goals in the squad. “I wasn’t aware of that until now, but I was aware of my good goal-scoring rate,” says the Bayern player, adding confidently: “I’m playing well at the moment and hopefully I’ll get to play here too.” It can be assumed that national coach Julian Nagelsmann will keep the place on the left wing free for Gnabry; the last person to play there was Jamal Musiala, who is missing this time due to a bruised hip.
At the age of 29, Gnabry is now an experienced player and is taking another shot at the DFB. “It was very bitter not to be there at the European Championship. I felt the team spirit. But I’ve been a big part of the national team in recent years and I want to stay that way.” Once again, he points to his good form and self-confidence.
Kimmich supports Gnabry’s claim
That’s why Gnabry is allowed to formulate claims: ”I already see myself as a player who leads the way.” Kimmich, the captain of the German national team, who is the same age as Gnabry, verbally supports his friend: “I’m extremely happy with how he’s come through the injury phase and is now performing at Bayern Munich. It’s well deserved that Serge is back. I’m convinced that he will be important for us again.”
At the German record champions, Gnabry is currently one of the strongest eleven, although he was considered a sales candidate within the club in the summer. Instead of moving, the winger has convinced his new coach Vincent Kompany with his performance. So far, he has played in every competitive game, started eight of nine games, and scored twice in the Bundesliga.
In the most recent games, however, Gnabry has lacked luck in front of goal, but he is currently performing more effectively than Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman or Mathys Tel. Gnabry would like to underpin this in Bosnia-Herzegovina and three days later in Munich against the Netherlands.
