“Gives us what we haven’t had yet”: Mavs coach Kidd raves about Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson will play for the Dallas Mavericks in the coming season. As Head Coach Jason Kidd revealed, it was above all Kyrie Irving who convinced the former Golden State Warriors guard to sign with Dallas

“A lot of players were involved in the recruiting process, but Kyrie Irving probably had the most impact,” Mavs coach Jason Kidd revealed in the Dub Talk podcast. “He was able to give Klay a detailed account of how his two years in Dallas went and showed him what could happen if Klay came to us,” Kidd continued.

Irving came to Dallas via trade in February 2023 and has repeatedly emphasized in recent months how comfortable he feels in Texas and how stable the franchise is. Last year, Irving played a major role in Dallas reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011.

The Mavericks are hoping for another boost with Thompson, the 34-year-old came to Texas via a sign-and-trade deal after twelve years with the Warriors and will earn a total of 50 million dollars over the next three seasons.

Kidd on Thompson: “Will need his experience ”

“We firmly believe he gives us something we didn’t have before. A guy who’s not afraid to take shots,” Kidd explained. “He knows how to win championships, he understands those situations (…) We’re going to need his experience and his leadership on our journey,” Kidd is certain.

Thompson has already been seen wearing Mavericks shirts at training a few times on social media. According to Marc Stein (Substack), some Mavs players are already training together in Los Angeles. Irving is present, but does not participate because he is recovering from hand surgery
