The German tennis team has secured group victory at the United Cup. Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund secured the decisive point for the 2-1 victory in the deciding mixed doubles match with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory over the Chinese duo Zhang Shuai/Zhang Zhizhen. Germany’s opponent in the quarter-finals on New Year’s Day will be Kazakhstan, with former Wimbledon champion Yelena Rybakina.
“I’m looking forward to it,” said Zverev after the victory: ‘Hopefully we can win again here and then travel on to Sydney.’ The semi-finals and the final will be held there.
Zverev and Siegemund satisfied
“When you play with each other for the first time in a long time, you never know what will happen,” said Siegemund after the mixed doubles, but she and Zverev, who is from Hamburg, did it “very well”.
Zverev, ranked second in the world in the singles, put Germany in the lead in Perth, Australia, with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Zhang Zhizhen, thus advancing the title defender to the quarterfinals. Doubles specialist Siegemund then lost to Gao Xingu in her singles match 1-6, 6-3, 3-6.
