Sophia Schäfle and Laura Kühn came away empty-handed in their bronze medal bouts.
The German wrestlers have to wait for their first medal at the European Championships in Bratislava. In the women’s tournament, after the German Wrestling Federation (DRB) failed to make an impact in the freestyle competition, Freiburg’s Sophia Schäfle (68 kg class) and Laura Kühn from Berlin (76 kg) were beaten in their bronze medal matches.
The next chance for precious metal in the team of women’s national coach Christoph Ewald is for two-time Olympian Luisa Niemesch. After her 4-8 semi-final loss to Sweden’s Johanna Lindborg, the Karlsruhe native will also compete for bronze on Friday.
Former silver medalist Schäfle was fighting a losing battle against Adela Hanzlickova for a place on the podium and lost 0:12. Former junior vice world champion Kühn also had to settle for fifth place after her defeat against Anastassija Simijankowa (Belarus).
The European Championships in the Slovakian capital end on Sunday. The Greco-Roman wrestling competitions are on the program to conclude the event.
