Tennis pro Tatjana Maria (36) has reached the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. In her opening match, the mother of two from Bad Saulgau defeated Bai Zhuoxuan from China 7:5, 6:3.
In the round of the last 16, Maria, seeded number two, will face the Italian Sara Errani or Caty McNally from the USA.
Maria made it past the first round at the Australian Open three weeks ago for the first time since 2016, but then lost her second-round match against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini. Last week in Thailand, she reached the round of 16
The defending champion Tamara Korpatsch will also get into the action on Tuesday – she will face Elina Awanessjan in the first round. The Hamburg native celebrated her first WTA title in Cluj in 2023, when the 250 tournament was still held in the fall. Laura Siegemund was eliminated in the first round on Monday
