Next to Spain and Japan, Germany is still missing a World Cup opponent. New Zealand and Costa Rica will play a play-off match on 14 June to determine the ticket for the finals in Qatar.
The New Zealand Football Association announced the date on Wednesday, with the match taking place in Qatar’s capital Doha. The winner of the intercontinental comparison will be the opponent of the DFB selection on 1 December (8pm). Before that, the team of national coach Hansi Flick will meet Japan on 23 November (2 p.m.) and Spain on 27 November (8 p.m.).
New Zealand had secured their place in the play-off as winners of the World Cup qualifiers in Oceania. The favourites, however, are the Costa Rican side. They had a furious final spurt in the North and Central American qualifiers.
The German team also has memories of the 2006 World Cup at home with Costa Rica, when they won the opening match in Munich 4-2.
