“German clubs are not courting me”: Gressel on Miami, Messi and transfers

Julian Gressel has played over 250 games in Major League Soccer. In an interview with SPOX, the 31-year-old talks, among other things, about his thoughts of leaving and a possible return to Germany.

At 19, he was still playing in the regional league for TSV Neustadt/Aisch. Today, twelve years later, his teammates include Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Since moving to the USA in 2013, Julian Gressel’s career has been on a steep upward trajectory.

In the MLS, he first played for Atlanta and D.C. United, before finally ending up at Inter Miami via the Vancouver Whitecaps and Columbus Crew. Last season, he was an undisputed starter there, but that has changed in the current season under new coach Javier Mascherano. “I’d be lying if I said I was happy with the whole situation,”

Gressel does not rule out a move

Gressel has not even appeared in the current season, and was not even in the squad for the last game. The transfer window in the USA is still open until April 23. “If something were to happen, I would be open to it,” says Gressel, but adds that he wants to “stay here in the MLS”.

For quite some time, quite a few people have been speculating about a return to Germany for the native of Franconia. Gressel clearly refutes these rumors: “It’s not the case that all German clubs are courting me – someone who ‘only’ played in the MLS,” he explains.

In the new episode, Gressel also talks about what makes Lionel Messi tick in the locker room, what particularly impresses him about Luis Suarez, and he shares the ins and outs of the “trading system” in the U.S.
