German boxer resigns European Championship title

Professional boxer Agit Kabayel resigns his European heavyweight title after his successful performance in Saudi Arabia – for good reason

Professional boxer Agit Kabayel has resigned his European heavyweight title after his successful performance in Saudi Arabia. This was confirmed by Kabayel’s management on Thursday in response to a SID inquiry.

The 31-year-old had “boxed his way into the top 5 or 6 in the world” with his latest success, and Kabayel had “no choice” but to relinquish his European Championship title for further top fights.

Kabayel unbeaten in his boxing career to date

Kabayel (24 wins from 24 fights) had defeated the previously unbeaten Russian Arslanbek Makhmudov by technical knockout on December 23 in Riyadh and put himself in position for a possible world championship fight.

The Bochum native had only regained the European Championship title in March of the previous year in a duel with Croatian Agron Smakici, after Kabayel had already relinquished the European Boxing Union (EBU) belt once before.

Kabayel’s decision also means that the German duel for the European Championship title with Tom Schwarz will not take place. The 29-year-old, who lost to current world champion Tyson Fury in 2019, had been named as a mandatory challenger by the EBU and will now have to face another opponent in the fight for the European title.
