Painful test for Wolfsburg’s Yannick Gerhardt: The 27-year-old had to leave the field and go to hospital early in VfL’s 4:1 win over Hamburger SV.
The test against Hamburger SV was short-lived for him. After just twelve minutes, Yannick Gerhardt was writhing in pain on the ground. Shortly before, there had been a loud crack in the AOK Stadium when Hamburg’s Robin Meißner held his sole over his opponent’s foot in a duel with Gerhardt. The 27-year-old from Wolfsburg could not continue, he left the stadium supported and immediately went to hospital.
It was a time of hope and fear for the VfL all-rounder, who had recently been used frequently on the left side of defence, as he was on Wednesday. Coach Mark van Bommel’s first hope after the game was “that it wasn’t as bad as it looked at first”. A first examination in the clinic then fortunately also brought a cautious all-clear. On Thursday, however, Gerhardt is due to undergo another examination, which will give a final indication of the severity of the injury.
Van Bommel did not want to reproach the Hamburger Meißner. “It’s a pity, of course, but something like that can also happen in training. It hurts.” And hopefully it is not worse than initially feared.
