George Saville heading to Middleborough after all

Northern Irish international George Saville was on Middlesbrough’s wish list before the transfer deadline. Millwall was reluctant to sell at that time but might be willing to do so after a poor start to the new campaign.

Millwall is currently ranked 16th, with five goals and a single win from five matches. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough finds themselves on top of the Championship table, sharing first place with Leeds United. George Saville, a gritty box-to-box midfielder, hasn’t been at his best for Millwall, perhaps in an attempt to force a move to a title contender. It appears he might get his wish, as Boro has rekindled their interest in the 25-year-old.

Where does George Saville fit in Tony Pulis’ plans?

Since the deadline has passed, the current negotiations reportedly involve an initial loan deal with the obligation to buy for €5.5 million in January. Saville would add another versatile player to Tony Pulis’ midfielder corps currently consisted of Adam Clayton, Stewart Downing, Jonathan Howson and Miralem Besic, whose loan deal with Everton was recently renewed. Saville’s arrival would help the team be better prepared for the gruelling demands of the English Championship in a season in which Middlesbrough is aiming for Premier League promotion.

George Saville signed a permanent deal with Millwall last season and immediately established himself as one of the team’s best players. He made 44 appearances for the second division outfit and scored 10 goals. He missed the last game with a concussion but should be back on the pitch soon.

Middlesbrough pursuing more reinforcements

Tony Pulis has been vocal in expressing his desire to add depth to his roster, with left-back and winger as the primary objectives. Boro have the finances to make some deals following the summer sales of Adama Traore (€20 million), Ben Gibson (€16 million), Patrick Bamford (€8 million), Fabio (€2 million) and Antonio Barragan (€1 million). Centre-backs Aden Flint (€8 million) and Paddy McNair (€5.7 million) are the only players to have been acquired for fees thus far.
