“Gamechanger” Reus has his visa

Marco Reus could make his debut for Los Angeles Galaxy as early as this weekend. After receiving his visa, only one “hurdle” is still missing

Marco Reus could be back on the pitch this weekend for the first time since losing the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund. Almost three months after the 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid at Wembley, in which he came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute shortly before the 1-0 loss, the 35-year-old could make his debut for Los Angeles Galaxy.

On Friday night (CEST), his new club announced that Reus had received his visa and could therefore feature in the league home game against Atlanta United on Sunday (4.30 CEST). “Marco is ready,” Galaxy wrote on X. The new midfielder signed a two-and-a-half-year contract until the end of 2026 last week after twelve years at BVB – his first time playing abroad.

Galaxy haven’t played a league game in a month

The clash with Atlanta is the Galaxy’s first league game since July 21. After that, the focus was on the Leagues Cup, in which all first division teams from the USA and Mexico compete. While L.A. had to bow out in the round of 16 (1:3 at the Seattle Sounders), defending MLS champions Columbus Crew and Galaxy city rivals Los Angeles FC will contest the final next Wednesday.

In the league, on the other hand, the Galaxy are right on course. Eight matchdays before the end of the regular season, coach Greg Vanney’s team leads the Western Conference, albeit just two points ahead of LAFC, who have played two games less. Reus could be “the ‘gamechanger’ for the rest of the season”, believes ex-Schalker Maya Yoshida, who joined the Galaxy last summer.

“We’re in a good mood at the moment,” says Reus himself, who watched “a lot” of Galaxy games during his vacation. “We have very, very good players.” One of them is 25-year-old Riqui Puig, who joined from FC Barcelona in 2022 and will be Reus’ creative partner in midfield.

Whether that happens against Atlanta now depends on one final “hurdle”: whether coach Vanney includes Reus in his matchday squad
