The Pole wins her third Grand Slam tournament in a thrilling final in Queens. Ons Jabeur, on the other hand, suffers another bitter defeat
Iga Swiatek has won the US Open 2022. The Polish world number one beat the Tunisian Ons Jabeur 6:2, 7:6 (7:5) in the final in New York and secured her third Grand Slam title overall.
Swiatek had already won the French Open in 2020 and 2022. Jabeur, on the other hand, has yet to have any luck in finals of the big four tournaments. In July, the current world number five had already lost the Wimbledon final (6:3, 2:6, 2:6 against Yelena Rybakina). She also missed out once again on becoming the first African and Arab Grand Slam tournament winner in the professional era.
“She plays perfect tennis “
World number one Swiatek became the first Pole in US Open history to triumph, extending her unblemished final record on the Grand Slam stage to 3-0.
“Iga Swiatek is aggressive, moves well, serves strong – she plays perfect tennis,” said German tennis star Angelique Kerber, absent due to pregnancy, commentating on Eurosport.
Swiatek got off to a great start and hardly allowed her opponent to develop with her aggressive and powerful game. Especially the return of the top-seeded Pole was always dangerous. Jabeur, who will move up from fifth to second place in the world rankings after the tournament, was particularly disappointing in the first set.
