Future of Formula 1 at Zandvoort: “Puzzle pieces must fit”

Whether Formula 1 will continue to race at Zandvoort in 2024 and 2025 is to be decided in the course of this year: Both parties positive

Will Formula 1 race at Zandvoort beyond 2023? That is to be decided later this year, “The decision about the fourth or fifth year will be made sometime this year. That is what we have discussed with FOM [Formula One Management],” says van Overdijk.

However, no decision is expected in the short term. Rather, it is likely to be made in September after this year’s Dutch Grand Prix. “After that would be more logical. We want to wait and see if the second edition is just as successful or even more successful,” says van Overdijk.

The current contract to stage the Dutch Grand Prix runs until 2023, with an option for 2024 and 2025 available to the circuit operators. And basically, the signs are pointing to an extension, after last year’s first Formula 1 appearance since 1985 at Zandvoort was one of the highlights of the Formula 1 season with Max Verstappen’s acclaimed home victory.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali had said afterwards that Zandvoort had “set a new standard in terms of fan experience.” And the track operators are also keen to keep Formula 1 on the Dutch North Sea coast for the long term – provided the economic conditions are right.

“Both parties are very positive and would like to continue, but all the pieces of the puzzle have to fit together,” van Overdijk. “As you know, we get no support from dr government and only work with private sponsors.”

With one exception: “The Zandvoort local council is the only government body that has really stepped in. Zandvoort has supported us very well, we are very grateful for that,” van Overdijk said. “Such a big event is associated with financial risks. “
