As part of the new FUT promo “Fantasy”, Allan Saint-Maximin came onto the transfer market. His price is unusually high despite the possible dynamic upgrades. The community is puzzled and angry.
“Fantasy” is the name of EA’s latest FUT promo for FIFA 22, but the FIFA community was critical of this event from the start. A team of players was released, most of whom had already received special cards in other promos. The community complains that always the same players get unjustified upgrades. Here EA is even accused of “recycling”.
Although the selection of players for FUT Fantasy was not based on performance, the event itself is still based on performance. As such, Fantasy players must meet certain requirements in real-world professional sports from 1 April in order to receive an upgrade in FIFA 22. With these potential upgrades in mind, one of the most absurd prizes in FIFA history also compounds: Newcastle United’s Saint-Maximin costs 4.1 million coins on the PlayStation.
Saint-Maximin more expensive than Pelé, Cruyff and Mbappé
The Frenchman has good stats, there’s no question about that. 97 pace, 90 shooting and 96 dribbling speak for themselves. Should Saint-Maximin meet all the requirements set by EA with Newcastle, then his overall rating will be pushed up to 95. So only with all the upgrades Saint-Maximin then becomes a card that is very attractive until the end of FIFA 22.
Nevertheless, one Reddit user criticises: “The 95 Pelé costs 3.3 million coins, Prime Cruyff and headliner Mbappé 3.6 million coins. Even if Saint-Maximin is a live card, he won’t be better than a Pelé or a Cruyff with 5-star skills and 5-star weak foot.” So how is it that Saint-Maximin is so much more expensive than the top tier of meta players, all of whom have better attributes?
For one thing, Saint-Maximin is currently the best forward alternative from the Premier League, especially if you are looking for a partner for Cristiano Ronaldo. For another, he has been converted from a left winger to a striker, making him easier to link up with. But that still doesn’t justify this horrendously high price.
FUT transfer market
So people continue to comment diligently, “He won’t live up to expectations on his FIFA 20 card.” Indeed, Saint-Maximin was a force in FIFA 20, but the gameplay and meta have changed since then. On Xbox, Fantasy Saint-Maximin is even more expensive than TOTY Mbappé. That pretty clearly shows the dilemma of the FIFA transfer market.
Every week a new promo comes out. Every week EA flushes new cards into the crowded market. That price ranges are miscalculated is almost a logical consequence. EA’s FUT mistakes are piling up. Saint-Maximin definitely does not live up to its price-performance ratio – even dynamic upgrades will not change that. To test such expensive cards, FIFA players theoretically have no choice but to buy FIFA Points with real money. Just by playing, a map costing four million coins remains practically unattainable.
