Anthony Joshua loses the heavyweight title fight to Daniel Dubois. Martial arts stars like Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk and Conor McGregor react to the big surprise.
Daniel Dubois shocked the boxing world on Saturday night! The Englishman inflicted a crushing defeat on his favored compatriot Anthony Joshua in the IBF heavyweight title fight. After the fight, boxing star Tyson Fury reacted to the outcome.
On Sky Sports, he defended Joshua: “Listen, it’s heavyweight boxing. These things happen, don’t they? It happens and it can happen to anyone.”
Usyk-withdrawal paves Joshua’s way to the title
Last May, Fury himself missed out on winning the IBF belt when he suffered defeat against Oleksandr Usyk. He was therefore able to empathize with Joshua’s bitter situation.
Usyk, on the other hand, was the undisputed heavyweight world champion after his victory, but he only relinquished his IBF belt a month later in June. Originally, the Ukrainian was supposed to defend his title against Dubois, but he opted for a rematch against Fury. His decision gave Joshua the chance to regain the world title.
“For me it was a surprise”
Usyk explained on Saturday evening: “I thought Anthony would win, but that’s boxing. For me, it was a surprise how the fight went.” The Ukrainian faced Joshua in 2021 and took the WBA, WBO and IBF belts from him.
Martial arts star Conor McGregor was also a guest at Wembley Stadium in London. The former UFC champion sat in the front rows by the ring and literally freaked out when Dubois sent his opponent to the ground several times. He was pleased for the 27-year-old after the fight: “It was a great performance from him.”
Boxing pro Chris Eubanks Jr. admitted that he hadn’t expected the fight to be so one-sided. “Before the fight, I said the only way Dubois could win was to go into the ring without respect for the setting and Joshua.” Eubanks Jr. added in praise: ‘That’s exactly what he did, and it was pretty impressive.’
