Füllkrug raises hopes of an early comeback

Niclas Füllkrug and England – it’s not really worked out so far. The striker has been repeatedly held back by injuries. But now an end to his suffering seems to be in sight.

Niclas Füllkrug left BVB for West Ham United in London in the summer. Things have not gone well for him there so far, as the 32-year-old is well aware. In December, he admitted that things were “absolutely awful” for him in England. He has made just nine Premier League appearances and scored two goals – and only played a single game in which he completed the full 90 minutes. That was the 4-1 defeat at Manchester City at the beginning of January, where he also scored the consolation goal.

However, in the third round of the FA Cup at Aston Villa (1-2), he suffered another setback: after a good quarter of an hour, the striker went down, grabbed his left hamstring and had to come off. Afterwards, he spoke of being forced to watch from the sidelines “unfortunately for a while”. In fact, it was another forced break of several weeks – between September and the beginning of December, Füllkrug had to take a long break after only three games for the Hammers due to an Achilles tendon irritation.

Home visit during the international break

But now things should start looking up for him again. “I’m on the right track,” said the 32-year-old in a Sky interview at Diego’s farewell game at Bremen’s Weserstadion, raising hopes of an early comeback. “I’m back in team training. I’m being slowly introduced, but it was a long injury after all.”

The striker is using the current international break to visit home. Among other things, he also turned up at the national team and visited his colleagues before their Nations League duel with Italy. On Saturday evening, he traveled to Bremen to attend Werder legend Diego’s farewell game. However, he did not play in front of the 42,000 spectators due to his injury.
