In the second match between Germany’s group opponents in the Davis Cup Intermediate Round, the Australians defeated France to extend their lead in the standings.
After their opening win against the tennis team from Belgium two days earlier, the Australians claimed their second victory in the group finals at Rothenbaum thanks to the doubles of Matthew Ebden/Max Purcell. This year’s Wimbledon winners deservedly defeated Nicolas Mahut/Arthur Rinderknech 6-4, 6-4.
Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi followed up a weak first set in the second singles match of the day and forced Alex de Minaur into a third set. There, the Australian held his nerve despite trailing, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to level the match. Earlier, world No. 79 Richard Gasquet easily defeated Davis Cup newcomer Jason Kubler 6-2, 6-4 to give the French the lead in the first match.
The day before, France had already lost 1-2 to the German team after the victories of Jan-Lennard Struff in the singles and Tim Pütz/Kevin Krawietz in the doubles. Before the German team’s clash against Belgium, the Australians are leading the table, followed by the Germans.
