Freiburg threaten to set a curious Bundesliga record

After three defeats in a row, SC Freiburg visit Borussia Mönchengladbach (Sunday, 17.30), hoping to end several negative streaks.

The last guest game of Freiburg in Mönchengladbach, which the Sport-Club lost unhappily with 1:2, would fit exactly into the current phase of the Breisgauer. Against Frankfurt and in Bochum, they recently had a multitude of scoring chances, but went off the pitch as losers. In both games Freiburg fired a total of 42 shots on goal, but scored only once. Even when they played Mönchengladbach last season in April, Freiburg had other great chances in the first half besides Roland Sallai’s opening goal, which they failed to take. In addition, they hardly conceded anything on the other side. That changed in the second half with two goals from Marcus Thuram within seven minutes, and in injury time Keven Schlotterbeck’s supposed equaliser was disallowed because Lucas Höler had been offside with his heel five passes earlier.

Freiburg have also lacked match luck in their last two games, and they will do everything they can to be more effective again on Sunday. for the first time since November 2020, they have lost three in a row again, with four defeats in a row last seen in April 2019. However, the Sport-Club’s increased away record speaks in their favour, as they have already picked up six victories in foreign stadiums this calendar year, three of them this season (Stuttgart, Hertha, Wolfsburg), and only in 1995 did they even manage seven. The SC can match this positive record on Sunday, otherwise the only chance to do so is in the game at Union Berlin.

26 games without an away win

However, Sport-Club has a poor overall record in Mönchengladbach. If that were to continue on Sunday, a curious record would be set. In the most recent 26 comparisons between the two teams, there has not been an away win, the last one being Gladbach’s 2001/02 win at Freiburg. On Sunday, the Bundesliga record of 27 games (1979 to 1992 at Frankfurt against Gladbach, 1966 to 1979 at Lautern against Bremen) can now be equalled. Incidentally, SC’s only away win in Gladbach to date came at the Bökelberg in April 1995.
