Following China’s rejection to host the 2023 Asian Cup, four other countries have applied to host.
With Australia, Indonesia, South Korea and World Cup host Qatar, four candidates have applied to host the tournament next year. This was announced by the Asian Continental Confederation (AFC) on Monday. The decision on the award is to be made on 17 October.
Actually, China was supposed to host the tournament from 16 June to 16 July 2023 in ten stadiums. However, due to its strict zero-covid strategy, the country had not felt able to host the competition.
The Asian Championship, the equivalent of the European Championship hosted by UEFA, features 24 national teams from the Asian region and Australia. Newcomer Tajikistan will take part in the continental tournament for the first time. The current title holder is Qatar, who defeated Japan in the 2019 final.
