Formula E will race on a new track variant in Berlin-Tempelhof in 2024: The 2.585-kilometer layout should better suit the Gen3 cars
All set for the Berlin E-Prix: The Formula E organizers have presented a new track layout for the two races on the site of the former Tempelhof Airport on 11 and 12 May 2024
At 2.585 kilometers, the new circuit is a good 200 meters longer than the previous version and has 15 bends. The pit lane and the start and finish line will be relocated to the previous back straight. The previous start-finish straight no longer leads into a narrowing “snail curve”, but into a fast triple left-hand bend.
The new layout is intended to better accommodate the more powerful Gen3 cars and ensure better racing conditions. After this year’s Berlin E-Prix, some drivers called for changes to the track. As the circuit on the apron of the former airport is rebuilt every year, such changes are much easier to implement than on permanent race tracks or street circuits.
“The new track in Berlin-Tempelhof has retained the soul of the old circuit and presents drivers and teams with new challenges that test driving skills as well as efficiency and energy consumption,” says Pablo Martino, Sporting Director of Formula E.
“The combination of fast, medium-fast and slow corners will lead to a range of different set-up options that will give different drivers an advantage in different parts of the lap, while two large overlap zones will guarantee exciting racing,” Martino continues.
Claudia Denni, Sporting Director of Formula E, also expects: “The new layout for Season 10 will create the right conditions for an even more exciting race, with a faster, more technical track and the potential for higher top speeds.”
“As always, Formula E will be supported by the DMSB and the ADAC in its sporting preparations and implementation, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their loyalty and commitment to our electric series,” said Denni.
With the exception of the 2015/16 season, when the Berlin E-Prix was held on the city circuit on Karl-Marx-Allee, Tempelhof has hosted a Formula E race every season. In 2020, the season ended there with six races in nine days after the long interruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2024 Formula E season begins on January 13 in Mexico City
