Formula 1 in Madrid instead of Barcelona? Carlos Sainz Sr. would be in favor

Barcelona has hosted Formula 1 for long enough, says Carlos Sainz Sr. and is campaigning for a switch to Madrid – what he thinks is the case for it

In recent weeks, there has been much speculation about a possible Formula 1 race in Madrid. Most recently, however, a member of the FIA emphasized that the decisive steps had not yet been taken. Now Carlos Sainz Sr. is now taking sides for a race in the Spanish capital

At the presentation of his Audi for the Dakar Rally, the 61-year-old was asked what he thought of the Grand Prix of Madrid and whether he was looking forward to it, and replied: “I think you can guess the answer to that question.”

“I think that a Grand Prix in Spain is fundamental. I don’t know if it will end up being one or two, but if it is confirmed, which could be possible, so if the Spanish Grand Prix comes to Madrid, of course, as a Madrilenian I would be happy.”

“I know what a Grand Prix means and the mark it leaves on a city,” says Sainz and hopes that Madrid will win the bid, even if it could mean that Barcelona loses its place on the calendar. After all, it seems rather unlikely that Formula 1 would want to hold two races in Spain.

The three-time Dakar winner and father of Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz jnr. says: “I think Catalonia has had this event for many years and they have enjoyed it. There is no written rule that says it has to be held in one place for life, and that’s how it was in Jerez at the time.”

Formula 1 was held there from 1986 to 1990 before moving to Barcelona. “These are processes in the world of motorsport that are evolving,” says Sainz and confirms: “If it really happens, I would be delighted. “

“I encourage everyone who has the opportunity to go for it. I think it’s a private initiative, so no one can point the finger at anyone and the money sinks somewhere. So I think if it is done, it will be a success,” the 61-year-old is convinced.

The project, if it comes to fruition, is to be realized near the IFEMA exhibition grounds. Sainz believes this is an ideal location: “Logistically, it’s unbeatable in the world, and it would be fantastic for the city of Madrid.”

He would also love to see his son compete in Madrid, where he grew up. Because he himself knows: “Competing in your city, as I have experienced in a few races or rallies, is simply fantastic. It’s unique.”

“If he is lucky enough, he will really enjoy this Grand Prix, and all Spaniards who want to come to Madrid know that it is a great city that has the best to offer,” the experienced racing driver promotes a move to Madrid.
