Jan Jongbloed has passed away at the age of 82. The former Dutch national goalkeeper played twice in the World Cup final with Oranje and is the oldest player ever to play in Dutch professional football.
The Netherlands mourn the loss of their former national goalkeeper Jan Jongbloed. The Amsterdam native died at the age of 82. He stood in goal for the Dutch national teams 24 times between 1962 and 1978. He even played for his country in the finals of the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, but was not crowned world champion in either tournament.
In the Dutch league, however, the keeper celebrated the 1963/64 championship in his home city with DWS Amsterdam. According to the Dutch Football Association KNVB, Jongbloed played a total of 717 games in Dutch professional football for DWS, FC Amsterdam, Roda JC and the Go Ahead Eagles, for whom he still played at the age of 44. His last appearance made him the oldest player ever to play in a Dutch professional match.
There is to be a minute’s silence for Jongbloed during the Netherlands’ European Championship qualifier on Thursday (20.45).
