“For you”: Grealish dedicates goal to deceased brother

On his Premier League starting 11 debut in 2025, Jack Grealish scored for the first time in 474 days. While celebrating, he also thought of the anniversary of his younger brother’s death.

Jack Grealish spent a full 34 minutes on the pitch in the Premier League before the international break in the calendar year 2025. On Wednesday evening in the home game against Leicester City, Pep Guardiola then ordered him into the starting lineup for the first time this year – and thus proved to have a golden touch: Grealish, who operated behind the only striker, Omar Marmoush, turned to celebrate in the second minute.

It was the 29-year-old’s first league goal after 474 days, since his interim 1-0 against Crystal Palace on December 16, 2023. He was understandably relieved. “I was happy to start tonight and happy to score,” the attacking midfielder said.

His winning streak ended on a special date for him and his family. Exactly 25 years ago to the day, his then nine-month-old brother passed away. “Always with me, especially on this day – that was you, Keelan,” the scorer wrote on Instagram.

Grealish had previously opened up about his emotions on Sky’s microphone: “This day is hard for the family, but I was happy to score a goal. My mom and dad were here.”

His coach paid tribute to his performance, Grealish was also named Man of the Match, while Guardiola said: “He had a good game. I’m happy for him. I know it’s not easy when you don’t play that often,” explained Guardiola.

Perhaps the Catalan will now rely on Grealish more in the absence of the injured Erling Haaland. Because Marmoush, who has occasionally lined up behind the Norwegian since his arrival, is now needed in the front line.
