Following in the footsteps of F1 & MotoGP: 24h Series introduces 6h ‘sprint’ race

The 24h Series organised by Creventic will run a sprint race for the first time in 2023, but its length will exceed even Endurance races in other series

One man’s endurance race is another man’s sprint: Creventic has built a special feature into the 2023 calendar for the 24h Series: Following the example of Formula 1 and MotoGP, a newly introduced race in Estoril will feature a sprint race.

This will be over a distance of six hours, which is classified as an endurance race in the vast majority of other racing series. In a 6-hour race on Friday, 7 July, the starting positions for the 12-hour race on Saturday will be determined (the Creventic leaves Sunday free outside of 24-hour races). Some championship points will also be distributed in the process.

The race with a total of 18 hours of driving time replaces the previous 24 Hours of Portimao, which has been a fixed point in the calendar so far. In June 2020, the race attracted some attention because it was the first international race after the COVID 19 lockdown.

With the elimination of the 24 Hours of Portimao, the 24h Series shrinks to just two 24-hour races: The series’ flagship 24 Hours of Dubai in mid-January, and the season finale in Barcelona, which moves from early to mid-September.

Also, no races outside Europe and Arabia are scheduled for 2023. The 24 Hours of Sebring, which provided the season finale in 2021 and was cancelled in 2022 for logistical reasons, no longer appears on the calendar.

The 24h Series will hold a 12-hour race in Kuwait on the first weekend of December 2022. This is also initially not scheduled in the calendar for 2023. However, as it is part of the newly created “Middle East Trophy” of the 24h Series, which is announced on a year-round basis, it can be assumed that the race will only be announced with the calendar for 2024.
