Bundestrainer Hansi Flick has reacted to the Corona case at the Nationalelf and two other absences with three re-nominations.
Maximilian Arnold (27), Ridle Baku (23) and Kevin Volland (29) are now part of the German squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein and in Armenia. Arnold and Baku are practically already there as professionals of VfL Wolfsburg, Volland travels from AS Monaco.
Midfielder Arnold had been hoping for an invitation for some time. He played his only international match to date on 13 May 2014, while flanker Baku wore the DFB jersey for the second time in a senior international match on Flick’s debut, the first leg against Liechtenstein (0-2) on 2 September. Attacker Volland (13 caps, one goal) had not been considered since the European Championship in the summer.
Flick is reacting to the Corona case of Niklas Süle, which has resulted in the absence of a total of five national players. A quartet, like Süle, had to go into quarantine.
Wirtz and Schlotterbeck are out
According to the DFB, Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz (muscular problems in the hip flexor) and Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck (muscular problems in the left thigh) are also out for the final two international matches of the calendar year.
