Fix: Christensen joins Barça

FC Barcelona have signed centre-back Andreas Christensen (26) on a free transfer. The transfer had been in the pipeline for quite some time.

After ten years at Chelsea FC, Andreas Christensen has signed a contract with another employer. The central defender will henceforth play for FC Barcelona.

The 1.87-metre tall defensive specialist, on loan for Borussia Mönchengladbach between 2015 and 2017, had already been the talk of the Catalans since March. Even German Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel seemed to suspect something since then and advised his now former protégé to stay. In vain. The 2021 Champions League winner is no longer in London.

The next transfer free prank

In Barcelona, the Dane, who has signed a contract until 2026, will meet Franck Kessié whose transfer from AC Milan, also on a free transfer, was announced on the same day. As with Kessié, the 26-year-old’s new contract includes an exit clause of 500 million euros.

Spain becomes Christensen’s fourth country in his career as a footballer. In 2012, he had moved from Brøndby in Denmark to the junior section of English capital club Chelsea, and after a detour in Germany, he developed into a permanent fixture at his parent club. He has appeared in 136 games (one goal) since 2017, and also won the Europa League with Chelsea in 2019.

Christensen secured the two biggest international competitions as well as the Club World Cup as a teammate of Antonio Rüdiger. As of now, the two will face each other in the Clasicos. The German international defender Rüdiger recently moved – also on a free transfer – to Champions League winners Real Madrid.
