The Yamaha factory team secures the services of MotoGP round winner Alex Rins, who will become teammate of former World Champion Fabio Quartararo in 2024
Alex Rins will move from LCR-Honda to Yamaha after the current MotoGP season. Yamaha confirmed this on Wednesday before the British Grand Prix in Silverstone. Shortly before, Yamaha had already announced that Franco Morbidelli will lose his place in the team.
For Rins, the move to the Yamaha factory team is a new challenge. After six years as a Suzuki factory rider, Rins had to find a new team due to his employer’s resignation and joined LCR-Honda in 2023.
Rins leaves Lucio Cecchinello’s squad after just one season, taking advantage of an exit clause in his contract that allows his contract to be terminated if he moves to a factory team. However, Rins has only signed for one year with Yamaha.
“We are delighted that Alex is joining the Yamaha team and welcome him warmly to the Yamaha MotoGP group,” commented Yamaha Racing Director Lin Jarvis. “We expect Alex to be a great asset. He has a lot of experience as a MotoGP rider and is known as a natural and multiple race winner in the MotoGP class. “
“He already has experience with two other MotoGP manufacturers and has ridden bikes with similar characteristics to the M1, which should help him adapt quickly to our bike. His win in Austin earlier this year underlines his speed, hunger and determination to succeed,” explains Lin Jarvis.
Alex Rins is currently recovering from a leg injury sustained at the Italian Grand Prix. He will be replaced by WSBK rider Iker Lecuona at Silverstone. “Alex has been out of the MotoGP paddock for a while due to the injury he sustained at Mugello, but we are confident he will be back to full fitness for the 2024 season,” notes Lin Jarvis.
“We are very much looking forward to working with him and believe he will work well with Fabio and improve the overall performance of the Yamaha MotoGP Team,” said the Yamaha Racing Director.
