First bad news, then an extension: Carvajal signs new contract with Real

Real Madrid have agreed an early contract extension with Dani Carvajal. The news came just hours after some bad news.

The news on Sunday morning quickly overshadowed Real’s home win the night before: Dani Carvajal has torn a cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be out for months. What followed was a declaration of war from the 32-year-old that he would come back “like a beast”, and then some positive news on Sunday at noon.

As Real Madrid officially announced, the club has agreed with Carvajal to extend his contract, which expires next summer. The new contract of the right-back runs until June 30, 2026.

In the official press release, the club celebrates its “legend” – not just a legend of Real Madrid, but of “world football” in general. Carvajal has been part of the 36-time Spanish champions’ youth teams since he was ten years old and has been playing for the Madrid club’s professional team since 2013, after a brief stint with Bayer Leverkusen. The fact that the contract extension was announced on “a day like today” only proves that Real Madrid is “the best club in the world in every respect,” Carvajal wrote on social media.

26 titles with Real Madrid

In total, Carvajal has played 391 official matches for Real Madrid (13 goals) and won an impressive 26 club titles. He has also played 51 matches for the Spanish national team, which was crowned with the European Championship title last summer.

In the current season, as in previous years, he was a regular and vice-captain in Carlo Ancelotti’s team. After 41 competitive games in the previous season, he started seven of eight league appearances and two Champions League games in 2024/25. In the coming months, he will probably be replaced by Lucas Vazquez.

In a press release, the club wished its home-grown player a speedy recovery “so that we can enjoy him on the pitch again as soon as possible”. Saturday evening’s misfortune had at least one positive counterpart on Sunday afternoon.
