The match between Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas was memorable. Now the behaviour of both tennis stars has consequences.
After their heated third round duel at the Wimbledon grass court classic, Australian Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece each have to pay a fine. Winner Kyrgios was fined 4,000 US dollars (about 3,840 euros) for foul language, Tsitsipas was fined 10,000 US dollars (about 9,590 euros) for unsportsmanlike conduct. This was announced by the tournament organisers on Sunday evening.
There were warnings on both sides of Kyrgios’ 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) on Saturday. The Australian called for a disqualification of his opponent when he hit a ball into the spectator stands. In addition, Tsitsipas was warned when he tried to hit a return on Kyrgios and hit the scoreboard.
Kyrgios got into it with the referees, asking umpire Damien Dumusois “Are you stupid?”, calling him a “disgrace” and using expletives on several occasions. The 27-year-old is the highest fined player of this tournament so far with a total of 14,000 US dollars. He was already fined 10,000 US dollars after the first round for spitting in the direction of a spectator during his match against Paul Jubb from Great Britain.
