The 2022 finalissima will take place at Wembley Stadium in London on 1 June (8.45pm). This was announced by UEFA on Tuesday. The European federation also announced that in the event of a draw, the match will not go into extra time but directly into a penalty shootout.
The finalissima is the result of the “extension of the cooperation agreement between UEFA and CONMEBOL”, the statement said. The clash between European and South American champions is therefore likely to become a model for the future – at least until 2028, when the associations’ extended agreement in principle expires.
The duel between the continental champions, which already took place in 1985 between France and Uruguay and in 1993 between Argentina and Denmark, will also involve a trophy. Italy qualified for the finalissima last year by beating England 3-2 in the European Championship final, while Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the final of the Copa America 2021.
